Walks In Volcano Country

In March we went south for a spontaneous weekend getaway. The area around Lonquimay has volcanoes, lakes, hot springs. It's actually just like Pucón, with the difference, that Pucón is hugely crowded and popular, while no one goes here. Maybe because the Llaima (left, below) is one of Chile's most active volcanoes. It spit up quite a mess in 2008... Anyway, when we walked through Conguillo Park, this monster looked beautiful and behaved nicely.

Another short hike goes up to Crater Navidad, an offset of the bigger Lonquimay Volcano. Navidad means christmas, because it last erupted in 1988, on Christmas Eve. 25 years on, the place still looks like Mars. Florian tested the depth of the crater's chimney with a pebble, and it didn't touch ground for 5-8sec! The rocks feel disturbingly warm. A type of warmth, that doesn't result from sunshine and that increases with every centimeter you dig... The eruption risk was set to "low" though, so I tried to enjoy the trip and not to worry too much.

Rain water often gets trapped along the walls of lava. We named the last water hole E.T.'s pool.
We followed the massive lava flow down to the Bío Bío River, then continued to Lonquimay village, where I bought a net of Araucaria seeds. Now (one month later) I'm still pretty clueless what to do with them. Eat raw, roast, grind, plant? So far nothing really worked. Any advice is welcome.

Finally, I wanted to share with you this hilarious short portrait of Chile. A find from our hostel's library. The text is out of an antique fishing guide (in German), issued by the Chilean tourism board. I'd say, if you wanted to scare people off, this is the way to go!
